Narrative:
Took off from ord. Flight attendant called, said she smelled something unusual. We also smelled air conditioning (dirty pack). Flight attendant said that some passenger felt ill from the fumes. We returned to ord to have the pack looked at, did not feel an emergency situation existed, but company declared one for us. Landed uneventfully. Supplemental information from acn 587464: after takeoff roll, we noticed a haze in cockpit. While accomplishing QRH procedures, the haze dissipated and flight attendants concurred the situation in the back was the same, although some passenger were complaining of headache and nausea. I notified dispatch of our return to ord, as well as ramp control.
