Narrative:
I took a personal flight from ptw to mtn. I departed ptw and climbed to 3000 ft, then called phl for flight following. I was told by phl to remain clear and call back in 20 mins. I proceeded direct to falston, md, so I would remain clear of aberdeen. I listened to mtn ATIS. I made my original call to mtn tower over W42 at 3000 ft, saying I was over falston airport at 3000 ft with ATIS, inbound. Their reply was, 'report right downwind midfield runway 33.' at this point, I thought I was cleared into their airspace. My second call was to martin tower to report midfield, right downwind. Once established, mtn asked what code I was squawking. I replied 1200. They asked if I had a discrete code. I replied, 'no.' I was then instructed to call potomac when I was on the ground, which I did. I gave potomac all my information with my explanation of what happened. I feel if phl had taken the flight following, this would not have happened. I feel mtn ATIS should have advised of ADIZ. I was told I was the third plane in 2 days that did that. I should have checked NOTAMS and for tfr, I neglected to. It will not happen again. I will not take a flight, even local, without a call to FSS first. I am an active instructor and I can tell you this will be taught to all my students as a learning experience.

Title: A PA28 PLT VIOLATED THE DC ADIZ WHEN LNDG MTN.
Narrative: I TOOK A PERSONAL FLT FROM PTW TO MTN. I DEPARTED PTW AND CLBED TO 3000 FT, THEN CALLED PHL FOR FLT FOLLOWING. I WAS TOLD BY PHL TO REMAIN CLR AND CALL BACK IN 20 MINS. I PROCEEDED DIRECT TO FALSTON, MD, SO I WOULD REMAIN CLR OF ABERDEEN. I LISTENED TO MTN ATIS. I MADE MY ORIGINAL CALL TO MTN TWR OVER W42 AT 3000 FT, SAYING I WAS OVER FALSTON ARPT AT 3000 FT WITH ATIS, INBOUND. THEIR REPLY WAS, 'RPT R DOWNWIND MIDFIELD RWY 33.' AT THIS POINT, I THOUGHT I WAS CLRED INTO THEIR AIRSPACE. MY SECOND CALL WAS TO MARTIN TWR TO RPT MIDFIELD, R DOWNWIND. ONCE ESTABLISHED, MTN ASKED WHAT CODE I WAS SQUAWKING. I REPLIED 1200. THEY ASKED IF I HAD A DISCRETE CODE. I REPLIED, 'NO.' I WAS THEN INSTRUCTED TO CALL POTOMAC WHEN I WAS ON THE GND, WHICH I DID. I GAVE POTOMAC ALL MY INFO WITH MY EXPLANATION OF WHAT HAPPENED. I FEEL IF PHL HAD TAKEN THE FLT FOLLOWING, THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I FEEL MTN ATIS SHOULD HAVE ADVISED OF ADIZ. I WAS TOLD I WAS THE THIRD PLANE IN 2 DAYS THAT DID THAT. I SHOULD HAVE CHKED NOTAMS AND FOR TFR, I NEGLECTED TO. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. I WILL NOT TAKE A FLT, EVEN LCL, WITHOUT A CALL TO FSS FIRST. I AM AN ACTIVE INSTRUCTOR AND I CAN TELL YOU THIS WILL BE TAUGHT TO ALL MY STUDENTS AS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
