Narrative:
I'm a company line check pilot and was doing IOE training with a transition first officer. We were making our first flight of the day from macon, GA, regional airport, which is also a maintenance facility for us. Normally, I always do a preflight inspection behind all first officer's, however, I was distraction by a gpu that fell off line, no dispatch release available, and briefing of my flight attendants. Furthermore, I was also trying to give a briefing to my first officer about the previous day's flying and what I wanted her to work on today. I didn't do a walkaround preflight. After takeoff and gear retraction, the nose gear failed to come up. Maintenance had left a nose gear pin in. We returned to macon, pulled the pin, got a new release, and flew to atlanta. Moral of the story, do the preflight walkaround behind first officer's, period.
