Narrative:
Flying from oxr to myf jul/thu/03, as a flight of 2. I am #2. Lead gets us out of oxr as a flight, properly checks us in with socal approach through every frequency change, but when switched to myf tower he doesn't tell them we are a flight. Another aircraft in the class D airspace has the same last 3 in north number as the aircraft I am flying. I am convinced tower doesn't know we are a flight of 2, and we are in their airspace. Very congested frequency. Every once in a while I hear instructions for 'xyx.' finally I tell the tower we are a flight of 2, lead is silent. His first time as lead. We get it sorted out, a mess that shouldn't have happened. Improper brief to lead by me, the senior pilot, lack of understanding of importance by lead. When cleared to land they cleared 'xyz' but not xyz flight! So, I called tower for landing clearance, got chewed out. Nobody gave us a phone number to call, but it shouldn't have happened.

Narrative: FLYING FROM OXR TO MYF JUL/THU/03, AS A FLT OF 2. I AM #2. LEAD GETS US OUT OF OXR AS A FLT, PROPERLY CHKS US IN WITH SOCAL APCH THROUGH EVERY FREQ CHANGE, BUT WHEN SWITCHED TO MYF TWR HE DOESN'T TELL THEM WE ARE A FLT. ANOTHER ACFT IN THE CLASS D AIRSPACE HAS THE SAME LAST 3 IN N NUMBER AS THE ACFT I AM FLYING. I AM CONVINCED TWR DOESN'T KNOW WE ARE A FLT OF 2, AND WE ARE IN THEIR AIRSPACE. VERY CONGESTED FREQ. EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE I HEAR INSTRUCTIONS FOR 'XYX.' FINALLY I TELL THE TWR WE ARE A FLT OF 2, LEAD IS SILENT. HIS FIRST TIME AS LEAD. WE GET IT SORTED OUT, A MESS THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED. IMPROPER BRIEF TO LEAD BY ME, THE SENIOR PLT, LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF IMPORTANCE BY LEAD. WHEN CLRED TO LAND THEY CLRED 'XYZ' BUT NOT XYZ FLT! SO, I CALLED TWR FOR LNDG CLRNC, GOT CHEWED OUT. NOBODY GAVE US A PHONE NUMBER TO CALL, BUT IT SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED.
