Narrative:

First officer was flying the civet 4 arrival. He had programmed the autoplt to do a profile descent, and was on profile meeting all altitude restrs on the descent. Slightly outside arnes, he became preoccupied with descending fast enough to be at fuelr at 8000 ft. Every time he tried to put a constraint in the mcdu of 8000 ft at fuelr, he got a message 'too steep path.' in an effort to try to get down to 8000 ft at fuelr, he selected an 'open descent' with 8000 ft in the altitude window. He forgot about the arnes 10000 ft restr and the suzzi 9000 ft restr. I caught him going through 10000 ft and told him to level off. The aircraft descended to 9400 ft and crossed arnes at 9400 ft. Conditions were VMC. No TCASII alert took place. No traffic conflicts were observed. Altitude deviation could have been prevented had first officer communicated his change from profile descent to open descent or done the open descent and put 10000 ft in the altitude window until arnes, 9000 ft until suzzi, and then 8000 ft until fuelr.

Title: AN A321 CAPT RPTED THAT HE AND HIS FO DID NOT MAKE A XING RESTR OVER ARNES IN SCT AIRSPACE.

Narrative: FO WAS FLYING THE CIVET 4 ARR. HE HAD PROGRAMMED THE AUTOPLT TO DO A PROFILE DSCNT, AND WAS ON PROFILE MEETING ALL ALT RESTRS ON THE DSCNT. SLIGHTLY OUTSIDE ARNES, HE BECAME PREOCCUPIED WITH DSNDING FAST ENOUGH TO BE AT FUELR AT 8000 FT. EVERY TIME HE TRIED TO PUT A CONSTRAINT IN THE MCDU OF 8000 FT AT FUELR, HE GOT A MESSAGE 'TOO STEEP PATH.' IN AN EFFORT TO TRY TO GET DOWN TO 8000 FT AT FUELR, HE SELECTED AN 'OPEN DSCNT' WITH 8000 FT IN THE ALT WINDOW. HE FORGOT ABOUT THE ARNES 10000 FT RESTR AND THE SUZZI 9000 FT RESTR. I CAUGHT HIM GOING THROUGH 10000 FT AND TOLD HIM TO LEVEL OFF. THE ACFT DSNDED TO 9400 FT AND CROSSED ARNES AT 9400 FT. CONDITIONS WERE VMC. NO TCASII ALERT TOOK PLACE. NO TFC CONFLICTS WERE OBSERVED. ALTDEV COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED HAD FO COMMUNICATED HIS CHANGE FROM PROFILE DSCNT TO OPEN DSCNT OR DONE THE OPEN DSCNT AND PUT 10000 FT IN THE ALT WINDOW UNTIL ARNES, 9000 FT UNTIL SUZZI, AND THEN 8000 FT UNTIL FUELR.
