Narrative:
Filed departure route was IDALE2. The pre departure clearance has a revised segment, IDALE2 bikkr oal. We assumed this meant to proceed from bikkr direct oal. We deleted shead intersection from the FMC. Upon reaching bikkr, we turned toward oal. At that time, ATC advised us that we should be turning to shead. We quickly complied with their request. They said a lot of aircraft were doing that and asked us to call them upon arrival in sfo. I called ATC and was advised that they have had this occur many times on this RNAV departure and considered the event as a local equipment problem. He advised me that no pilot deviation action would be taken. I suggested that the revised pre departure clearance would have been easier to understand if they listed it as idale 2 oal transition.

Title: HEADING TRACK DEV BY A B737-300 FLT CREW WHEN MISREADING THE DEP PROC AND THE INTENTIONS OF THEIR REVISED PDC WHEN DEPARTING ON THE IDALE RNAV TWO DEP OVER OAL FROM LAS, NV.
Narrative: FILED DEP RTE WAS IDALE2. THE PDC HAS A REVISED SEGMENT, IDALE2 BIKKR OAL. WE ASSUMED THIS MEANT TO PROCEED FROM BIKKR DIRECT OAL. WE DELETED SHEAD INTXN FROM THE FMC. UPON REACHING BIKKR, WE TURNED TOWARD OAL. AT THAT TIME, ATC ADVISED US THAT WE SHOULD BE TURNING TO SHEAD. WE QUICKLY COMPLIED WITH THEIR REQUEST. THEY SAID A LOT OF ACFT WERE DOING THAT AND ASKED US TO CALL THEM UPON ARR IN SFO. I CALLED ATC AND WAS ADVISED THAT THEY HAVE HAD THIS OCCUR MANY TIMES ON THIS RNAV DEP AND CONSIDERED THE EVENT AS A LCL EQUIP PROB. HE ADVISED ME THAT NO PLTDEV ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN. I SUGGESTED THAT THE REVISED PDC WOULD HAVE BEEN EASIER TO UNDERSTAND IF THEY LISTED IT AS IDALE 2 OAL TRANSITION.
