Narrative:
Deviation from assigned route for WX. At approximately XA55Z at FL350 along A554, I asked the first officer to request from ATC 25 mi eastward deviation due to WX. Shortly thereafter, ATC returned with 'unable east, but able west deviation.' since we had hazardous WX in front and off our right (west) we were unable to deviate to the west. The cells were big, and tops much higher than FL350. I then had the first officer inform ATC that I was exercising my captain's 'emergency authority/authorized' to deviate to the east up to 20 mi. This was approaching noogy intersection. We then deviated almost 20 NM off to the left, and returned on course over keegan intersection. We reported on course over keegan, and updated our ETA for lamer. We lost 1 min off our original estimate. Lamer is compulsory and a fir boundary. We saw no traffic during this time, and none showed on TCASII.
