Narrative:
Being sequenced into arrival flow at stl for landing on runway 12L using lda approach. Initially on a 270 degree heading. Subsequently vectored to 210 degrees, then 180 degrees, then 150 degree heading to intercept runway 12L lda. We were advised of traffic on approach to runway 12R -- 2 F15's on final. We made and maintained visual contact with this flight of two and were cleared for the visual to runway 12L. Slightly overshot lda course, but quickly corrected back on course. A second flight of 2 F15's came up from behind us on final for runway 12R. RA was triggered, but we had visual contact on them and remained well clear of the flight. Unfortunately, tower cleared another aircraft for takeoff on runway 12L. It was clear to me there would not be sufficient clearance for us to continue the approach and landing. So, I directed the first officer, who was flying at the time, to go around at about 500 ft afl. Go around power was used and logged in the logbook. We were resequenced back into the arrival flow and subsequently landed without clearance.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: MD80 CREW WAS BOXED IN BY 4 F15'S AND A DEPARTING ACFT AT STL. THE CREW HAD A TCASII RA. THE CREW WAS MAINTAINING VISUAL WITH THE 5 ACFT AND EXECUTING GAR.
Narrative: BEING SEQUENCED INTO ARR FLOW AT STL FOR LNDG ON RWY 12L USING LDA APCH. INITIALLY ON A 270 DEG HDG. SUBSEQUENTLY VECTORED TO 210 DEGS, THEN 180 DEGS, THEN 150 DEG HDG TO INTERCEPT RWY 12L LDA. WE WERE ADVISED OF TFC ON APCH TO RWY 12R -- 2 F15'S ON FINAL. WE MADE AND MAINTAINED VISUAL CONTACT WITH THIS FLT OF TWO AND WERE CLRED FOR THE VISUAL TO RWY 12L. SLIGHTLY OVERSHOT LDA COURSE, BUT QUICKLY CORRECTED BACK ON COURSE. A SECOND FLT OF 2 F15'S CAME UP FROM BEHIND US ON FINAL FOR RWY 12R. RA WAS TRIGGERED, BUT WE HAD VISUAL CONTACT ON THEM AND REMAINED WELL CLR OF THE FLT. UNFORTUNATELY, TWR CLRED ANOTHER ACFT FOR TKOF ON RWY 12L. IT WAS CLR TO ME THERE WOULD NOT BE SUFFICIENT CLRNC FOR US TO CONTINUE THE APCH AND LNDG. SO, I DIRECTED THE FO, WHO WAS FLYING AT THE TIME, TO GO AROUND AT ABOUT 500 FT AFL. GAR PWR WAS USED AND LOGGED IN THE LOGBOOK. WE WERE RESEQUENCED BACK INTO THE ARR FLOW AND SUBSEQUENTLY LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC.
