Narrative:
Replaced a 'B' hydraulic system electric motor driven hydraulic pump due to overheating. During next flight, new pump overheated. Debris was found in case drain filter. Case drain filter was replaced to fix overheat problem. I did not check or change the case drain filter during the pump change because the case drain and pressure filters were inspected the previous day (for an overheat) and no debris was found, indicating the pump was not overheating due to mechanical failure. If the pump is being replaced for other than a mechanical failure, the filter does not have to be replaced (reference maintenance manual 29-15-22, step 2.F.12).

Title: A B737-300 WAS DISPLACED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH AN AC MOTOR HYD PUMP REPLACED FOR OVERHEATING, BUT THE CASE DRAIN FILTER NOT INSPECTED OR REPLACED.
Narrative: REPLACED A 'B' HYD SYS ELECTRIC MOTOR DRIVEN HYD PUMP DUE TO OVERHEATING. DURING NEXT FLT, NEW PUMP OVERHEATED. DEBRIS WAS FOUND IN CASE DRAIN FILTER. CASE DRAIN FILTER WAS REPLACED TO FIX OVERHEAT PROB. I DID NOT CHK OR CHANGE THE CASE DRAIN FILTER DURING THE PUMP CHANGE BECAUSE THE CASE DRAIN AND PRESSURE FILTERS WERE INSPECTED THE PREVIOUS DAY (FOR AN OVERHEAT) AND NO DEBRIS WAS FOUND, INDICATING THE PUMP WAS NOT OVERHEATING DUE TO MECHANICAL FAILURE. IF THE PUMP IS BEING REPLACED FOR OTHER THAN A MECHANICAL FAILURE, THE FILTER DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REPLACED (REF MAINT MANUAL 29-15-22, STEP 2.F.12).
