Narrative:
After departure from catalina airport, a descent was made to 1500 ft MSL. Flight turned east and passed over 2 harbors then turned northwest to parallel the shoreline of catalina island. Flight proceeded northwest at 1500 ft approximately 1/2 mi offshore. At emerald bay a 270 degree turn at standard rate was started. Approximately 90 degrees of turn was complete when a flash was seen over the canopy. A cessna was observed in a right bank on the opposite heading (90 degrees) going east (flight was heading 270 degrees west). Radio contact was established on 122.7 and I indicated my intention to report. The distance the aircraft passed is only an estimate, but 20 ft to no more than 40 ft. I only saw aircraft #2 after it had passed.

Title: AN SF260 PLT HAS AN NMAC WITH A C152 IN THE VICINITY OF CATALINA, CA.
Narrative: AFTER DEP FROM CATALINA ARPT, A DSCNT WAS MADE TO 1500 FT MSL. FLT TURNED E AND PASSED OVER 2 HARBORS THEN TURNED NW TO PARALLEL THE SHORELINE OF CATALINA ISLAND. FLT PROCEEDED NW AT 1500 FT APPROX 1/2 MI OFFSHORE. AT EMERALD BAY A 270 DEG TURN AT STANDARD RATE WAS STARTED. APPROX 90 DEGS OF TURN WAS COMPLETE WHEN A FLASH WAS SEEN OVER THE CANOPY. A CESSNA WAS OBSERVED IN A R BANK ON THE OPPOSITE HDG (90 DEGS) GOING E (FLT WAS HDG 270 DEGS W). RADIO CONTACT WAS ESTABLISHED ON 122.7 AND I INDICATED MY INTENTION TO RPT. THE DISTANCE THE ACFT PASSED IS ONLY AN ESTIMATE, BUT 20 FT TO NO MORE THAN 40 FT. I ONLY SAW ACFT #2 AFTER IT HAD PASSED.
