Narrative:
Was on a flight from dsm to foe. Cleared for the visual approach. Out of approximately 10000 ft, we lined up on what we thought was runway 21 at foe. We called 5 mi final. Tower said 'not in sight, continue.' finally, the tower at foe said 'you are probably lined up on runway 22 at top, go around.' we went around as directed and realized that we had lined up on runway 22 at top by mistake. We went around and landed at foe. We should have stayed on radar longer before accepting the change to tower frequency and had the 'apt' function up on the FMS which would have showed us lining up on the wrong airport. Also dialing up an approach to foe if one was available could have stopped this before it happened. Supplemental information from acn 592922: we were headed on a 210 degree heading and the sun was setting in the west, so there was quite a bit of glare. There were no precision approachs to runway 21, so we had the FMS set up for a centerline. I confirmed that we were lined up on the correct airport runway by the centerline on the FMS. (Note: on page #3 of this diagram, the top airport is only about 1 mi to the west of the centerline of runway 21 at foe and about 2-3 mi closer to us.)
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACE-560 FLT CREW INADVERTENTLY LINED UP ON A RWY FOR THE WRONG ARPT. TWR ISSUED A GAR.
Narrative: WAS ON A FLT FROM DSM TO FOE. CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH. OUT OF APPROX 10000 FT, WE LINED UP ON WHAT WE THOUGHT WAS RWY 21 AT FOE. WE CALLED 5 MI FINAL. TWR SAID 'NOT IN SIGHT, CONTINUE.' FINALLY, THE TWR AT FOE SAID 'YOU ARE PROBABLY LINED UP ON RWY 22 AT TOP, GO AROUND.' WE WENT AROUND AS DIRECTED AND REALIZED THAT WE HAD LINED UP ON RWY 22 AT TOP BY MISTAKE. WE WENT AROUND AND LANDED AT FOE. WE SHOULD HAVE STAYED ON RADAR LONGER BEFORE ACCEPTING THE CHANGE TO TWR FREQ AND HAD THE 'APT' FUNCTION UP ON THE FMS WHICH WOULD HAVE SHOWED US LINING UP ON THE WRONG ARPT. ALSO DIALING UP AN APCH TO FOE IF ONE WAS AVAILABLE COULD HAVE STOPPED THIS BEFORE IT HAPPENED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 592922: WE WERE HEADED ON A 210 DEG HDG AND THE SUN WAS SETTING IN THE W, SO THERE WAS QUITE A BIT OF GLARE. THERE WERE NO PRECISION APCHS TO RWY 21, SO WE HAD THE FMS SET UP FOR A CTRLINE. I CONFIRMED THAT WE WERE LINED UP ON THE CORRECT ARPT RWY BY THE CTRLINE ON THE FMS. (NOTE: ON PAGE #3 OF THIS DIAGRAM, THE TOP ARPT IS ONLY ABOUT 1 MI TO THE W OF THE CTRLINE OF RWY 21 AT FOE AND ABOUT 2-3 MI CLOSER TO US.)
