Narrative:

Flight was cleared to taxi to runway 5 from airline terminal. The ground controller made no mention of holding short of runway 9 or that traffic was using a crossing runway. As a matter of habit and practice, approaching runway 9 at taxiway a, I looked left and called out 'clear left.' at about the time the first officer called 'whoa!' I looked right and saw a single engine aircraft over the landing threshold and I immediately stopped. As it turned out, I was short of the hold line by about 1 ft. If I had continued, I am convinced a collision would have occurred unless the landing pilot would have gone around at an altitude of less than 50 ft. The controller never said anything. The first officer asked the controller if we had been cleared to cross and after a pause, he said 'hold short' and then 'thanks for help.'

Title: JS-3201 CREW WAS CLRED TO CROSS A RWY IN FRONT OF A LNDG LIGHT ACFT AT TRI.

Narrative: FLT WAS CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 5 FROM AIRLINE TERMINAL. THE GND CTLR MADE NO MENTION OF HOLDING SHORT OF RWY 9 OR THAT TFC WAS USING A XING RWY. AS A MATTER OF HABIT AND PRACTICE, APCHING RWY 9 AT TXWY A, I LOOKED L AND CALLED OUT 'CLR L.' AT ABOUT THE TIME THE FO CALLED 'WHOA!' I LOOKED R AND SAW A SINGLE ENG ACFT OVER THE LNDG THRESHOLD AND I IMMEDIATELY STOPPED. AS IT TURNED OUT, I WAS SHORT OF THE HOLD LINE BY ABOUT 1 FT. IF I HAD CONTINUED, I AM CONVINCED A COLLISION WOULD HAVE OCCURRED UNLESS THE LNDG PLT WOULD HAVE GONE AROUND AT AN ALT OF LESS THAN 50 FT. THE CTLR NEVER SAID ANYTHING. THE FO ASKED THE CTLR IF WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO CROSS AND AFTER A PAUSE, HE SAID 'HOLD SHORT' AND THEN 'THANKS FOR HELP.'
