Narrative:
Accomplished before start checklist. Called, received beacon. Tug hooked up, established communications. Requested push. Received push over radio, relayed to tug driver. Coordinated brake release. Tug driver started pushback and cleared us to start engines. Crew heard ramp tower discuss aircraft tail strike on ramp frequency. Tug driver notified crew of tail strike. Directed crew to shut down engines. Crew coordinated actions with ramp tower. Pulled into parking gate and shut down. Supplemental information from acn 594513: we were pushed back in a straight line then turned 90 degrees. As we stopped, we could see we had been pushed past the south ramp taxi line and into taxiway V (an active taxiway) without ATC clearance. To do this the tug driver had rolled us across the red 'ramp line' painted on the concrete. When questioned about this over the intercom, the tug driver stated 'yeah, I didn't line you up on the taxi line, but it's off to your left.' to our left was the taxi line for taxiway V, to our right the red ramp barrier and inside it further right was the south ramp taxi line. We immediately called ground and advised of our position on taxiway V.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B727 FLT CREW HAS COLLISION WITH ANOTHER ACFT DURING PUSHBACK FROM THE GATE AT MEM.
Narrative: ACCOMPLISHED BEFORE START CHKLIST. CALLED, RECEIVED BEACON. TUG HOOKED UP, ESTABLISHED COMS. REQUESTED PUSH. RECEIVED PUSH OVER RADIO, RELAYED TO TUG DRIVER. COORDINATED BRAKE RELEASE. TUG DRIVER STARTED PUSHBACK AND CLRED US TO START ENGS. CREW HEARD RAMP TWR DISCUSS ACFT TAIL STRIKE ON RAMP FREQ. TUG DRIVER NOTIFIED CREW OF TAIL STRIKE. DIRECTED CREW TO SHUT DOWN ENGS. CREW COORDINATED ACTIONS WITH RAMP TWR. PULLED INTO PARKING GATE AND SHUT DOWN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 594513: WE WERE PUSHED BACK IN A STRAIGHT LINE THEN TURNED 90 DEGS. AS WE STOPPED, WE COULD SEE WE HAD BEEN PUSHED PAST THE S RAMP TAXI LINE AND INTO TXWY V (AN ACTIVE TXWY) WITHOUT ATC CLRNC. TO DO THIS THE TUG DRIVER HAD ROLLED US ACROSS THE RED 'RAMP LINE' PAINTED ON THE CONCRETE. WHEN QUESTIONED ABOUT THIS OVER THE INTERCOM, THE TUG DRIVER STATED 'YEAH, I DIDN'T LINE YOU UP ON THE TAXI LINE, BUT IT'S OFF TO YOUR L.' TO OUR L WAS THE TAXI LINE FOR TXWY V, TO OUR R THE RED RAMP BARRIER AND INSIDE IT FURTHER R WAS THE S RAMP TAXI LINE. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED GND AND ADVISED OF OUR POS ON TXWY V.
