Narrative:
Incident occurred on runway 8 apron at XA23. Winds were calm at clm, port angeles, washington, sep/wed/03. I had heard aircraft Y announce incoming for runway 26, 10 mi out. An aircraft came up to the run-up pad, so I told him to proceed with his takeoff, which he did quickly. Another aircraft taxied up, so I went ahead to the hold back line, announced, looked both ways and taxied out to runway 8 centerline. At this point I saw the approaching landing lights, so got off runway 8 fast. I realized that I must have missed aircraft Y short final announcement and was so shaken I went back to my hangar. The following day I had discussion with my pilot organization advisor and a group of experienced flyers, technical people, and an airport safety committee member. I had feelings that I was not mentally and emotionally ready to fly the aircraft, due in part to some serious concerns at home. I failed to do the 'I'm safe' checklist, which may have prevented this serious lapse.
