Narrative:
I received an IFR clearance before taxiing at gkt airport and was given a 'hold for release' instruction. I was to report to the controller when ready for takeoff. Upon ready for takeoff I called knoxville approach and advised I was ready for takeoff. After not receiving any further communication from ATC I assumed they could not receive or transmit to me being as I was in the mountains and not familiar with communication abilities within the area. (I was informed that ATC may not be able to communicate with me at the area in which I was.) being in uncontrolled airspace (class G) and VMC prevailing I decided I would get airborne and would get better communication ability with ATC. I observed no traffic inbound nor was any traffic reported on CTAF. I departed soon after a light twin landed and assumed that was the aircraft I was to 'hold for.' upon being airborne I gained communication with ATC before entering controled airspace. I believe better information as to ATC ability to communicate with aircraft on the ground at uncontrolled airports would help aleve this problem.

Title: AFTER RECEIVING A HOLD FOR RELEASE CLRNC FROM TYS APCH, A PA28 PLT DEPARTED VFR WHEN HE WAS UNABLE TO CONTACT APCH ON THE GND.
Narrative: I RECEIVED AN IFR CLRNC BEFORE TAXIING AT GKT ARPT AND WAS GIVEN A 'HOLD FOR RELEASE' INSTRUCTION. I WAS TO RPT TO THE CTLR WHEN READY FOR TKOF. UPON READY FOR TKOF I CALLED KNOXVILLE APCH AND ADVISED I WAS READY FOR TKOF. AFTER NOT RECEIVING ANY FURTHER COM FROM ATC I ASSUMED THEY COULD NOT RECEIVE OR XMIT TO ME BEING AS I WAS IN THE MOUNTAINS AND NOT FAMILIAR WITH COM ABILITIES WITHIN THE AREA. (I WAS INFORMED THAT ATC MAY NOT BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WITH ME AT THE AREA IN WHICH I WAS.) BEING IN UNCTLED AIRSPACE (CLASS G) AND VMC PREVAILING I DECIDED I WOULD GET AIRBORNE AND WOULD GET BETTER COM ABILITY WITH ATC. I OBSERVED NO TFC INBOUND NOR WAS ANY TFC RPTED ON CTAF. I DEPARTED SOON AFTER A LIGHT TWIN LANDED AND ASSUMED THAT WAS THE ACFT I WAS TO 'HOLD FOR.' UPON BEING AIRBORNE I GAINED COM WITH ATC BEFORE ENTERING CTLED AIRSPACE. I BELIEVE BETTER INFO AS TO ATC ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE WITH ACFT ON THE GND AT UNCTLED ARPTS WOULD HELP ALEVE THIS PROB.
