Narrative:
ATIS idented runway 17 as active. Ground cleared me to an intersection departure runway 17, so I taxied to intersection. Tower cleared me for runway 17 departure and right turn out after my run-up. Winds were crosswind and light. I turned right onto runway 35 and proceeded to depart wrong direction. Tower immediately idented my error and cleared me for runway 35 and left turnout. Cause was my error. I had in my head the direction I was leaving. I have been at airport several times typically departing midfield on runway 17. For some reason I had taken note thinking this was different than before. Had several opportunities to recognize (ie, right turn out that puzzled me), winds showed no runway preference, runway very long either direction from intersection C. (Runway is more than 13000 ft long total.) I was just thinking right turn as I pulled onto taxiway. To prevent: I won't make same mistake twice. Signs at intersection could help, but shouldn't be needed.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A GRUMMAN SINGLE PLT, DEPARTING FROM AN INTXN OF RWY 17-35 DEPARTED IN THE WRONG DIRECTION WHICH WAS CAUGHT BY ZZZ TWR.
Narrative: ATIS IDENTED RWY 17 AS ACTIVE. GND CLRED ME TO AN INTXN DEP RWY 17, SO I TAXIED TO INTXN. TWR CLRED ME FOR RWY 17 DEP AND R TURN OUT AFTER MY RUN-UP. WINDS WERE XWIND AND LIGHT. I TURNED R ONTO RWY 35 AND PROCEEDED TO DEPART WRONG DIRECTION. TWR IMMEDIATELY IDENTED MY ERROR AND CLRED ME FOR RWY 35 AND L TURNOUT. CAUSE WAS MY ERROR. I HAD IN MY HEAD THE DIRECTION I WAS LEAVING. I HAVE BEEN AT ARPT SEVERAL TIMES TYPICALLY DEPARTING MIDFIELD ON RWY 17. FOR SOME REASON I HAD TAKEN NOTE THINKING THIS WAS DIFFERENT THAN BEFORE. HAD SEVERAL OPPORTUNITIES TO RECOGNIZE (IE, R TURN OUT THAT PUZZLED ME), WINDS SHOWED NO RWY PREFERENCE, RWY VERY LONG EITHER DIRECTION FROM INTXN C. (RWY IS MORE THAN 13000 FT LONG TOTAL.) I WAS JUST THINKING R TURN AS I PULLED ONTO TXWY. TO PREVENT: I WON'T MAKE SAME MISTAKE TWICE. SIGNS AT INTXN COULD HELP, BUT SHOULDN'T BE NEEDED.
