Narrative:
ADIZ flight plan filed to EMI, 4000 ft. Turned over to potomac approach and told to continue on course. As I filed to 4000 ft I climbed on that heading to 4000 ft. I was not told to remain clear of class B but I did not hear cleared into class B. To make matters worse, my headset cable came loose and I did not respond to ATC for about 5 mins. Mentally, I was flying IFR. Rarely do I fly VFR and my mindset was IFR. That was wrong as I had not filed IFR. The loose cable was unfortunate at that time. I have 'tis' on my airplane and there was no loss of separation. ATC knew I was EMI direct and filed to 4000 ft, but, that said, I was in error.
