Narrative:
Cleared into position and hold. Entered runway while completing checklist. Was told aircraft on 4 mi final. As I completed the turn to runway alignment, just before parking brakes, tower cleared us for takeoff. Immediately xferred control to first officer who added power and began takeoff roll. The engines were less than responsive, but not truly remarkable. Prior to 40 KTS, tower was heard to say 'sorry aircraft call sign, I thought this would work. Aircraft call sign, go around.' once we were airborne during handoff to departure, the tower controller chose to chastise me with the following, 'next time you can be a little more expeditious,' or something to that effect. I responded that we added power immediately after receiving takeoff clearance. His response was, 'it looked like a full 30 seconds to me.' I asked if it was a problem and requested a phone number. No response was received and we switched to departure and let it go. No true problem was experienced and I fully understand the pressures our ATC brethren work under.
