Narrative:
Quick turn in yyz (25 mins). 2 federal air marshals boarded in between turn. Captain briefed and received one from familiarizations. Proper announcements made concerning remaining seated into dca. Passenger boarded and we took off. 1/2 way en route, captain inquired if a password was still needed for dca. He didn't get one in yyz. Called dispatch on commercial radio but dispatcher confirmed password needed, but could not provide it over the radio. Informed approach we had no password and diverted to iad. Aircraft inspected by proper auths and released to dca in about 30 mins. Suggestions for prevention: 1) print on remarks section of release that captain needs to contact dispatch prior to launch to dca. 2) print a special card for pilots for their binder detailing procedures for dca. 3) have dispatch contact agents to tell crew to contact dispatch prior to takeoff. Moral: never assume other guy has complied with proper procedure prior to takeoff.
