Narrative:
On approach to landing on runway 19 at republic airport, farmingdale, ny (frg), I requested and was granted permission to 'land long.' shortly after touchdown, the tower controller instructed me to make the next turn off due to traffic on final approach. In trying to comply with the tower controller's change of instructions for exiting at the next taxiway, hard braking was required. The nosewheel locked and the aircraft pulled to the right and could not be turned left. The propeller struck a taxiway sign and the sign was damaged. Once cleared for a long landing, the controller should not have changed my clearance during the rollout. In the future, under similar circumstances, I would advise the tower controller that I am unable to comply with his revised instructions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ON TOUCHDOWN AFTER BEING APPROVED FOR A LONG LNDG, THE PLT OF A C177RG WAS INSTRUCTED BY FRG TWR TO MAKE THE NEXT TURNOFF AND LOST CTL OF THE ACFT.
Narrative: ON APCH TO LNDG ON RWY 19 AT REPUBLIC ARPT, FARMINGDALE, NY (FRG), I REQUESTED AND WAS GRANTED PERMISSION TO 'LAND LONG.' SHORTLY AFTER TOUCHDOWN, THE TWR CTLR INSTRUCTED ME TO MAKE THE NEXT TURN OFF DUE TO TFC ON FINAL APCH. IN TRYING TO COMPLY WITH THE TWR CTLR'S CHANGE OF INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXITING AT THE NEXT TXWY, HARD BRAKING WAS REQUIRED. THE NOSEWHEEL LOCKED AND THE ACFT PULLED TO THE R AND COULD NOT BE TURNED L. THE PROP STRUCK A TXWY SIGN AND THE SIGN WAS DAMAGED. ONCE CLRED FOR A LONG LNDG, THE CTLR SHOULD NOT HAVE CHANGED MY CLRNC DURING THE ROLLOUT. IN THE FUTURE, UNDER SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCES, I WOULD ADVISE THE TWR CTLR THAT I AM UNABLE TO COMPLY WITH HIS REVISED INSTRUCTIONS.
