Narrative:

On descent for arrival to anc, I copied the arrival ATIS incorrectly. The altimeter setting on the ATIS was actually 30.04, I copied it as 30.40. After vectors to a visual approach to runway 6R, anc approach cleared us for a visual approach to runway 6R with the constraint 'maintain 1600 ft until established.' when we were in the vicinity of the NDB bob, anc approach called and queried us about our indicated altitude. We responded that we were showing 1600 ft on our altimeters and asked what approach was showing on his radar. He responded that he showed us at 1200 ft and repeated the altimeter setting 30.04. We corrected our altimeter settings and climbed up to 1600 ft and continued the approach and landing without further incident. Supplemental information from acn 599315: we both were commenting about the large difference in settings between fai and anc without any strong winds or turbulence in the area. Next time I'll also look closer at the radar altimeter as AGL/MSL xchk is also of real value.

Title: ALT OVERSHOT WHEN A B737-400 FLT CREW SETS THE WRONG ALTIMETER SETTING FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 6 AT ANC, AK.

Narrative: ON DSCNT FOR ARR TO ANC, I COPIED THE ARR ATIS INCORRECTLY. THE ALTIMETER SETTING ON THE ATIS WAS ACTUALLY 30.04, I COPIED IT AS 30.40. AFTER VECTORS TO A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 6R, ANC APCH CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH TO RWY 6R WITH THE CONSTRAINT 'MAINTAIN 1600 FT UNTIL ESTABLISHED.' WHEN WE WERE IN THE VICINITY OF THE NDB BOB, ANC APCH CALLED AND QUERIED US ABOUT OUR INDICATED ALT. WE RESPONDED THAT WE WERE SHOWING 1600 FT ON OUR ALTIMETERS AND ASKED WHAT APCH WAS SHOWING ON HIS RADAR. HE RESPONDED THAT HE SHOWED US AT 1200 FT AND REPEATED THE ALTIMETER SETTING 30.04. WE CORRECTED OUR ALTIMETER SETTINGS AND CLBED UP TO 1600 FT AND CONTINUED THE APCH AND LNDG WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 599315: WE BOTH WERE COMMENTING ABOUT THE LARGE DIFFERENCE IN SETTINGS BTWN FAI AND ANC WITHOUT ANY STRONG WINDS OR TURB IN THE AREA. NEXT TIME I'LL ALSO LOOK CLOSER AT THE RADAR ALTIMETER AS AGL/MSL XCHK IS ALSO OF REAL VALUE.
