Narrative:
As we were turning from downwind to base for runway 1, after being cleared for the visual approach and being turned over to the tower, the flight engineer spotted an aircraft approaching from about the 9 O'clock position on a southwest track as we were in the turn. I altered course to the right and the other pilot then went to the left. We advised the tower. The tower called the aircraft by his n-number and said 'I thought you said you were going southwest,' to which the pilot replied, 'I am going southwest.' nothing more was said.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B727 HAS TO TAKE ACTION TO AVOID A CESSNA IN THE TFC PATTERN.
Narrative: AS WE WERE TURNING FROM DOWNWIND TO BASE FOR RWY 1, AFTER BEING CLRED FOR THE VISUAL APCH AND BEING TURNED OVER TO THE TWR, THE FE SPOTTED AN ACFT APCHING FROM ABOUT THE 9 O'CLOCK POS ON A SW TRACK AS WE WERE IN THE TURN. I ALTERED COURSE TO THE R AND THE OTHER PLT THEN WENT TO THE L. WE ADVISED THE TWR. THE TWR CALLED THE ACFT BY HIS N-NUMBER AND SAID 'I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU WERE GOING SW,' TO WHICH THE PLT REPLIED, 'I AM GOING SW.' NOTHING MORE WAS SAID.
