Narrative:
1 galley stowage compartment in the forward galley of an MD88 would not close. The hinge had come loose from the door and the rivets would not go back through the holes making the door larger. Due to this the door would not close. I removed the door and secured it in the forward coat closet. I then put it on maintenance carryover per MEL 25-00-11A. The MEL states that the compartment should be secured closed. I was not able to close the door, so I removed it. There is nothing stored in the compartment. It is used to mix drinks on. The problem with removing it is that it requires an era/engineering authority/authorized to do so. I was under the impression that an era was only needed if it was removed from the aircraft. After the aircraft left approximately 30 mins, our maintenance control was notified and the aircraft was scheduled to be stopped when it arrived back ZZZ to have this situation corrected. I have enclosed a copy of our MEL and open maintenance item.

Title: AN MD88 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE WITH A FORWARD GALLEY COMPARTMENT DOOR REMOVED WITH BROKEN HINGES IN CONFLICT WITH MEL.
Narrative: 1 GALLEY STOWAGE COMPARTMENT IN THE FORWARD GALLEY OF AN MD88 WOULD NOT CLOSE. I THEN PUT IT ON MAINT CARRYOVER PER MEL 25-00-11A. THE MEL STATES THAT THE COMPARTMENT SHOULD BE SECURED CLOSED. I WAS NOT ABLE TO CLOSE THE DOOR, SO I REMOVED IT. THERE IS NOTHING STORED IN THE COMPARTMENT. IT IS USED TO MIX DRINKS ON. THE PROB WITH REMOVING IT IS THAT IT REQUIRES AN ERA/ENGINEERING AUTH TO DO SO. I WAS UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT AN ERA WAS ONLY NEEDED IF IT WAS REMOVED FROM THE ACFT. AFTER THE ACFT LEFT APPROX 30 MINS, OUR MAINT CTL WAS NOTIFIED AND THE ACFT WAS SCHEDULED TO BE STOPPED WHEN IT ARRIVED BACK ZZZ TO HAVE THIS SIT CORRECTED. I HAVE ENCLOSED A COPY OF OUR MEL AND OPEN MAINT ITEM.
