Narrative:
Flight was operated within normal parameters until the aircraft was in position and holding at the departure end of runway 31L. Runway visibility was then below takeoff minimums. I then contacted the tower and requested clearance to taxi off the runway. The tower controller then cleared us to taxi on the runway and to cross the intersecting runway (4L). Visibility was reduced due to fog on the runway that appeared to intensify as we traveled from the departure end of runway 31L. After crossing runway 4L, the tower controller directed us to exit the runway via taxiway kk. I could see a large yellow sign indicating the intersection of taxiway kk and runway 31L. As the aircraft turned, I observed that the nose of the aircraft was to the right of the taxiway, though it remained on a paved surface. I then brought the aircraft to a stop and requested assistance. A tug came out and pulled the aircraft back onto the taxiway, and to the ramp. After a maintenance inspection of the aircraft, refueling and a new dispatch, we continued the flight to our destination. The remainder of the flight was conducted within normal parameters.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757-200 CREW ALMOST TAXIED OFF A TXWY AT JFK WHEN OPERATING AT NIGHT IN RVR 600 FT CONDITIONS.
Narrative: FLT WAS OPERATED WITHIN NORMAL PARAMETERS UNTIL THE ACFT WAS IN POS AND HOLDING AT THE DEP END OF RWY 31L. RWY VISIBILITY WAS THEN BELOW TKOF MINIMUMS. I THEN CONTACTED THE TWR AND REQUESTED CLRNC TO TAXI OFF THE RWY. THE TWR CTLR THEN CLRED US TO TAXI ON THE RWY AND TO CROSS THE INTERSECTING RWY (4L). VISIBILITY WAS REDUCED DUE TO FOG ON THE RWY THAT APPEARED TO INTENSIFY AS WE TRAVELED FROM THE DEP END OF RWY 31L. AFTER XING RWY 4L, THE TWR CTLR DIRECTED US TO EXIT THE RWY VIA TXWY KK. I COULD SEE A LARGE YELLOW SIGN INDICATING THE INTXN OF TXWY KK AND RWY 31L. AS THE ACFT TURNED, I OBSERVED THAT THE NOSE OF THE ACFT WAS TO THE R OF THE TXWY, THOUGH IT REMAINED ON A PAVED SURFACE. I THEN BROUGHT THE ACFT TO A STOP AND REQUESTED ASSISTANCE. A TUG CAME OUT AND PULLED THE ACFT BACK ONTO THE TXWY, AND TO THE RAMP. AFTER A MAINT INSPECTION OF THE ACFT, REFUELING AND A NEW DISPATCH, WE CONTINUED THE FLT TO OUR DEST. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS CONDUCTED WITHIN NORMAL PARAMETERS.
