Narrative:

During the special noise abatement departure at sna, a malfunction occurred in the autothrottle system after takeoff. When VNAV was selected at 854 ft MSL as required by the noise abatement procedure, the power setting did not automatically change to climb and the throttles remained at takeoff power. The same indications remained when flch or speed was selected. The autoflt system had not prematurely captured and selected altitude. The autothrottles were then disconnected and power set manually. By this time, however, the aircraft was well past the point where the noise abatement power reduction was required. I do not know if a noise violation occurred at sna but safety required dealing with the malfunction and flying the aircraft.

Title: B757-200 CREW WAS NOT ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THE NOISE ABATEMENT PROC BECAUSE ON AN AUTOTHROTTLE FAILURE AT SNA.

Narrative: DURING THE SPECIAL NOISE ABATEMENT DEP AT SNA, A MALFUNCTION OCCURRED IN THE AUTOTHROTTLE SYS AFTER TKOF. WHEN VNAV WAS SELECTED AT 854 FT MSL AS REQUIRED BY THE NOISE ABATEMENT PROC, THE PWR SETTING DID NOT AUTOMATICALLY CHANGE TO CLB AND THE THROTTLES REMAINED AT TKOF PWR. THE SAME INDICATIONS REMAINED WHEN FLCH OR SPD WAS SELECTED. THE AUTOFLT SYS HAD NOT PREMATURELY CAPTURED AND SELECTED ALT. THE AUTOTHROTTLES WERE THEN DISCONNECTED AND PWR SET MANUALLY. BY THIS TIME, HOWEVER, THE ACFT WAS WELL PAST THE POINT WHERE THE NOISE ABATEMENT PWR REDUCTION WAS REQUIRED. I DO NOT KNOW IF A NOISE VIOLATION OCCURRED AT SNA BUT SAFETY REQUIRED DEALING WITH THE MALFUNCTION AND FLYING THE ACFT.
