Narrative:

Approximately 145 mi west of jvl, ATC gave crossing instructions. Crossing was 120 mi west of jvl at FL290. The crossing was programmed into the FMC, and the altitude set into the MCP. The FMC did not initiate a descent. A min or 2 later, I noticed that the crossing point was less than 20 mi away. The MCP was in altitude hold. It must have changed to altitude hold before the captain got the altitude changed. We did not notice this. I initiated a descent with full speed brakes and a MCP speed of .830 mach. We crossed the 120 mi fix approximately 6000 ft high.
