Narrative:
Aircraft has a previous history of elevator problems. Took a several hour delay for overnight maintenance to repair and test 'elevator asymmetric' status message on aircraft. All was normal until on climb out, the status message reappeared. There is no communication procedure nor any relief from item in MEL. This is an indication to me that this problem is quite unusual, and with no MEL relief, very important. Tried numerous communications with dispatch and maintenance controller on XXX.X, YYY.Y, and other company frequencys. Maintenance controller and dispatch were unreadable. After CRM discussions with the first officer (17+ yrs here, my 26+) we decided that the best course of action was to land short in ZZZ, safety being the paramount reason. Landed uneventfully, wrote up the recurring problem. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated that maintenance did not advise the crew of the maintenance action or the component failure.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B757-200 IN CLB AT 13000 FT DIVERTED DUE TO EICAS 'ELEVATOR ASYMMETRIC' WARNING. NO GUIDANCE IN THE FOM FOR THIS ITEM.
Narrative: ACFT HAS A PREVIOUS HISTORY OF ELEVATOR PROBS. TOOK A SEVERAL HR DELAY FOR OVERNIGHT MAINT TO REPAIR AND TEST 'ELEVATOR ASYMMETRIC' STATUS MESSAGE ON ACFT. ALL WAS NORMAL UNTIL ON CLBOUT, THE STATUS MESSAGE REAPPEARED. THERE IS NO COM PROC NOR ANY RELIEF FROM ITEM IN MEL. THIS IS AN INDICATION TO ME THAT THIS PROB IS QUITE UNUSUAL, AND WITH NO MEL RELIEF, VERY IMPORTANT. TRIED NUMEROUS COMS WITH DISPATCH AND MAINT CTLR ON XXX.X, YYY.Y, AND OTHER COMPANY FREQS. MAINT CTLR AND DISPATCH WERE UNREADABLE. AFTER CRM DISCUSSIONS WITH THE FO (17+ YRS HERE, MY 26+) WE DECIDED THAT THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO LAND SHORT IN ZZZ, SAFETY BEING THE PARAMOUNT REASON. LANDED UNEVENTFULLY, WROTE UP THE RECURRING PROB. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED THAT MAINT DID NOT ADVISE THE CREW OF THE MAINT ACTION OR THE COMPONENT FAILURE.
