Narrative:
Departed leesburg VFR. Should have been DVFR. Communication established immediately upon takeoff, but did not have discrete transponder code assigned prior to departure. Not locally based and unfamiliar with the area. I thought I was clear of the ADIZ. We were conducting training operations, transiting leesburg. Suggest fbos within the ADIZ be requested to post ADIZ procedures prominently to assist transient pilots.
