Narrative:

I decided to check the oxygen mask microphone system. I donned the mask, flipped the microphone switch to oxygen mask and called ATC for a radio check. Well, I forgot to change the audio selector from headset (we were wearing headsets before the check) to speaker (required to hear ATC). ATC was responding, but we couldn't hear them (total time: 4 mins approximately). I realized the error and went back to headsets. They said they were trying to call us 5 different times. No traffic conflicts were involved. Because of the lack of regular oxygen mask use, I missed performing the exact audio selection required for that mode of operation.
