Narrative:

Air interrupt. Takeoff runway 22R. Gear retraction, had unsafe right main landing gear red light. Proceeded through checklist, cycled gear, unsafe up red light remained illuminated. Having unsafe gear up indication and having burned approximately 2000 pounds driving around pattern working the problem, decided to return to ewr. When flaps were retracted on downwind, unsafe gear light went out. Concurrently, 'automatic spoiler do not use' light came on. Continued with approach and overweight landing at ewr, 140000 pounds. Told maintenance during debrief to perform overweight landing inspection, but neglected to write it up in maintenance logbook. Departed ewr without having overweight landing inspection recorded. En route to dfw, had dispatch verify with ewr maintenance that inspection had been done, then made maintenance log entry in dfw explaining it.
