Narrative:
Following a tower clearance to taxi into position and hold, we took our position on runway 23 from alpha intersection. From our position, the far end of the runway was not visible due to the area of raised elevation near where runway 23 crosses runway 18L. After holding in position for about 30-40 seconds, we were given a takeoff clearance. As we were crossing runway 18L, I saw what appeared to be a large transport aircraft crossing downfield from right to left. My speed at the time was below 100 KTS and I initiated an aborted takeoff. The throttles were at idle and just as I was about to deploy the spoilers and apply the brakes, the downfield aircraft appeared to be clear. I then adjusted the throttles for takeoff. I continued the takeoff and departure and proceeded to atl without incident or xmissions of unusual nature. At the time we saw this aircraft, it appeared that it may have been on taxiway east or F. Also, it is possible that the aircraft may have been on a landing rollout after arriving on runway 18R. Certainly, it was not a near miss or close call, but a moment of concern.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A LEAR35 PIC STARTS AN ABORT AND THEN CONTINUES WITH HIS TKOF FROM RWY 23 WHEN HE BELIEVES XING GND TFC NEAR RWY 18R MAY HAVE BEEN A RWY INCURSION AT CLT, NC.
Narrative: FOLLOWING A TWR CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD, WE TOOK OUR POS ON RWY 23 FROM ALPHA INTXN. FROM OUR POS, THE FAR END OF THE RWY WAS NOT VISIBLE DUE TO THE AREA OF RAISED ELEVATION NEAR WHERE RWY 23 CROSSES RWY 18L. AFTER HOLDING IN POS FOR ABOUT 30-40 SECONDS, WE WERE GIVEN A TKOF CLRNC. AS WE WERE XING RWY 18L, I SAW WHAT APPEARED TO BE A LARGE TRANSPORT ACFT XING DOWNFIELD FROM R TO L. MY SPD AT THE TIME WAS BELOW 100 KTS AND I INITIATED AN ABORTED TKOF. THE THROTTLES WERE AT IDLE AND JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO DEPLOY THE SPOILERS AND APPLY THE BRAKES, THE DOWNFIELD ACFT APPEARED TO BE CLR. I THEN ADJUSTED THE THROTTLES FOR TKOF. I CONTINUED THE TKOF AND DEP AND PROCEEDED TO ATL WITHOUT INCIDENT OR XMISSIONS OF UNUSUAL NATURE. AT THE TIME WE SAW THIS ACFT, IT APPEARED THAT IT MAY HAVE BEEN ON TXWY E OR F. ALSO, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE ACFT MAY HAVE BEEN ON A LNDG ROLLOUT AFTER ARRIVING ON RWY 18R. CERTAINLY, IT WAS NOT A NEAR MISS OR CLOSE CALL, BUT A MOMENT OF CONCERN.
