Narrative:
Departing dulles via capitol 5 departure, charted altitude is 3000 ft. We thought we were cleared to 5000 ft and direct ldn. Supervisor came on asked why we were at 5000 ft. We told him we thought we had been cleared to 5000 ft. He informed us that it should have only been 3000 ft and for next time, make sure we stop at 3000 ft. We apologized, and then the original controller gave us an additional climb. That was the end of the incident.
