Narrative:
Upon initial flap extension during vectors for the approach to runway 9R at ord, we received the EICAS status message of 'leading edge slat disagree' and the flap indicator froze between 'up' and '1 degree.' we notified chicago approach, ran the appropriate checklists, including the alternate flap extension checklist, gave the flight attendants a cabin advisory, made a PA announcement, had the emergency equipment standing by, and made a normal landing using trailing edge flaps 20 degrees. After landing, we queried the tower as to their observations. Both our indications and their observations were normal, so we taxied to gate and left the flaps/slats in their landing confign. During taxi in, we notified ramp and maintenance. Mechanics met the airplane and we completed a logbook write-up.
