Narrative:

Location: right base runway 18R. Approach brought over the top for an approach to runway 18R. Regional approach gave us headings to a visual approach. Controller turned us and then cleared us for a visual approach from a right base. Assigned downwind heading much too close to the runway along with a w-e 40 KT wind at altitude caused us to overshoot to runway 17R. No conflict occurred. I questioned the approach controller and he issued an apology for the tight downwind and also mentioned the wind was not helping him.
