Narrative:
Immediately after landing gear retraction, following a normal takeoff requiring power to be set per performance book, as the result of a confign anomaly, the left engine had a compressor stall. A loud pop was heard. The aircraft yawed to the left. Engine indications decreased on the left engine. EPR reduced to the 6 O'clock position, approximately 1.15-1.20, then recovered matching the right engine. Lax tower reported momentary black smoke from one of the engines. We requested a downwind entry to return to lax for a landing on either runway 25L or runway 25R. We did not observe any limitations exceeded, although the flight attendant at door 3L thought she felt a small vibration. We continued to operate the engine at reduced thrust. We were handed off to departure control who vectored us for an uneventful landing on runway 25L, where the emergency equipment was standing by. After no fire or damage was observed by the emergency personnel, we taxied to our gate without further event. The landing was smooth and not overweight.

Title: A B777 FLT CREW AND FLT ATTENDANT RPTED THAT AN ENG OUT DURING TKOF REQUIRED A RETURN TO LAX.
Narrative: IMMEDIATELY AFTER LNDG GEAR RETRACTION, FOLLOWING A NORMAL TKOF REQUIRING PWR TO BE SET PER PERFORMANCE BOOK, AS THE RESULT OF A CONFIGN ANOMALY, THE L ENG HAD A COMPRESSOR STALL. A LOUD POP WAS HEARD. THE ACFT YAWED TO THE L. ENG INDICATIONS DECREASED ON THE L ENG. EPR REDUCED TO THE 6 O'CLOCK POS, APPROX 1.15-1.20, THEN RECOVERED MATCHING THE R ENG. LAX TWR RPTED MOMENTARY BLACK SMOKE FROM ONE OF THE ENGS. WE REQUESTED A DOWNWIND ENTRY TO RETURN TO LAX FOR A LNDG ON EITHER RWY 25L OR RWY 25R. WE DID NOT OBSERVE ANY LIMITATIONS EXCEEDED, ALTHOUGH THE FLT ATTENDANT AT DOOR 3L THOUGHT SHE FELT A SMALL VIBRATION. WE CONTINUED TO OPERATE THE ENG AT REDUCED THRUST. WE WERE HANDED OFF TO DEP CTL WHO VECTORED US FOR AN UNEVENTFUL LNDG ON RWY 25L, WHERE THE EMER EQUIP WAS STANDING BY. AFTER NO FIRE OR DAMAGE WAS OBSERVED BY THE EMER PERSONNEL, WE TAXIED TO OUR GATE WITHOUT FURTHER EVENT. THE LNDG WAS SMOOTH AND NOT OVERWT.
