Narrative:
I was conducting a training flight. The student was a pre-private, learning steep turn stalls. Conducted clearing turns, and after seeing no traffic, began steep turn towards the southeast. Student pilot did left turn, rolled out and began right turn. On rollout from right turn, I sighted a seneca on a head-on heading at same altitude. I took controls and went power full and made a climbing right turn. Seneca did not alter course or react. Seneca passed 100-200 ft beneath us. Pilot of seneca had blue and white shirt on! I still don't know if the seneca saw us. I'm glad I saw him! We were in practice area 'B' for melbourne. The flight training areas around melbourne and vero brach are some of the busiest in the area. An alert area needs to be established around mlb and transient pilots should be made aware of the frequency used by the aircraft in the practice areas. The experience definitely shook me up and while my student and I did clear the area prior to maneuvering, I will be sure to check even more carefully next time.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NMAC BTWN A MANEUVERING PA28 ON A TRAINING FLT AND A P34 IN CRUISE AT 2500 FT 15 NM NW OF MLB, FL. PLT MANEUVERING IN A KNOWN PA28-161 PRACTICE AREA.
Narrative: I WAS CONDUCTING A TRAINING FLT. THE STUDENT WAS A PRE-PVT, LEARNING STEEP TURN STALLS. CONDUCTED CLRING TURNS, AND AFTER SEEING NO TFC, BEGAN STEEP TURN TOWARDS THE SE. STUDENT PLT DID L TURN, ROLLED OUT AND BEGAN R TURN. ON ROLLOUT FROM R TURN, I SIGHTED A SENECA ON A HEAD-ON HDG AT SAME ALT. I TOOK CTLS AND WENT PWR FULL AND MADE A CLBING R TURN. SENECA DID NOT ALTER COURSE OR REACT. SENECA PASSED 100-200 FT BENEATH US. PLT OF SENECA HAD BLUE AND WHITE SHIRT ON! I STILL DON'T KNOW IF THE SENECA SAW US. I'M GLAD I SAW HIM! WE WERE IN PRACTICE AREA 'B' FOR MELBOURNE. THE FLT TRAINING AREAS AROUND MELBOURNE AND VERO BRACH ARE SOME OF THE BUSIEST IN THE AREA. AN ALERT AREA NEEDS TO BE ESTABLISHED AROUND MLB AND TRANSIENT PLTS SHOULD BE MADE AWARE OF THE FREQ USED BY THE ACFT IN THE PRACTICE AREAS. THE EXPERIENCE DEFINITELY SHOOK ME UP AND WHILE MY STUDENT AND I DID CLR THE AREA PRIOR TO MANEUVERING, I WILL BE SURE TO CHK EVEN MORE CAREFULLY NEXT TIME.
