Narrative:
Before starting engine checklist complete. Just prior to pushback/engine start checklist complete. #2 engine start normal. During #1 engine start, aircraft moved forward approximately 5 ft. Both captain and I immediately applied brakes to stop aircraft. Flight attendants informed us that #3 engine made contact with ground equipment. Damage would not be classified as serious. APU inoperative as per MEL. Ground equipment present for engine airstart and electrical power. Parking brake malfunction entered in maintenance log. No injuries reported. Passenger deplaned normally via air stairs.

Title: DURING APU INOP ENG START, L101 ROLLS FORWARD AND STRIKES GND SUPPORT EQUIP DESPITE INDICATIONS OF PROPERLY SET PARKING BRAKE.
Narrative: BEFORE STARTING ENG CHKLIST COMPLETE. JUST PRIOR TO PUSHBACK/ENG START CHKLIST COMPLETE. #2 ENG START NORMAL. DURING #1 ENG START, ACFT MOVED FORWARD APPROX 5 FT. BOTH CAPT AND I IMMEDIATELY APPLIED BRAKES TO STOP ACFT. FLT ATTENDANTS INFORMED US THAT #3 ENG MADE CONTACT WITH GND EQUIP. DAMAGE WOULD NOT BE CLASSIFIED AS SERIOUS. APU INOP AS PER MEL. GND EQUIP PRESENT FOR ENG AIRSTART AND ELECTRICAL PWR. PARKING BRAKE MALFUNCTION ENTERED IN MAINT LOG. NO INJURIES RPTED. PAX DEPLANED NORMALLY VIA AIR STAIRS.
