Narrative:
After receiving our en route clearance, the PNF contacted ground control for taxi clearance. The ground controller issued a clearance to taxi to runway 22L using taxiway J, runway 4L to hold short of runway 31L. I misunderstood the instructions and I thought our runway of departure was runway 31C, often used when departing the west ramp. Runway 31C was in use. The taxi instructions for runway 31C began the same as the instructions for runway 22L and both included hold short instruction for runway 31L. I began to taxi via taxiway J and runway 4L but I turned right on taxiway F instead of continuing on runway 4L. The controller saw my error and told me to turn left on taxiway Y and cross runway 31L, runway 31C and runway 31R and continue. When I approached runway 31R, I made a right turn on the runway instead of crossing the runway, still planning on runway 31C. The controller said 'where are you going?' and before the PNF could respond, the controller said to continue taxi to runway 31C and hold short, which I did. We departed runway 31C and the rest of the flight was normal. Lack of cockpit communication was a contributing factor. The controller issued the clearance very quickly. The clearance to runway 22L is normally via taxiway west and taxiway north to hold short of runway 22R. No conflict was created.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A CE-560 FLT CREW HAVE A RWY INCURSION.
Narrative: AFTER RECEIVING OUR ENRTE CLRNC, THE PNF CONTACTED GND CTL FOR TAXI CLRNC. THE GND CTLR ISSUED A CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 22L USING TXWY J, RWY 4L TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 31L. I MISUNDERSTOOD THE INSTRUCTIONS AND I THOUGHT OUR RWY OF DEP WAS RWY 31C, OFTEN USED WHEN DEPARTING THE W RAMP. RWY 31C WAS IN USE. THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FOR RWY 31C BEGAN THE SAME AS THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR RWY 22L AND BOTH INCLUDED HOLD SHORT INSTRUCTION FOR RWY 31L. I BEGAN TO TAXI VIA TXWY J AND RWY 4L BUT I TURNED R ON TXWY F INSTEAD OF CONTINUING ON RWY 4L. THE CTLR SAW MY ERROR AND TOLD ME TO TURN L ON TXWY Y AND CROSS RWY 31L, RWY 31C AND RWY 31R AND CONTINUE. WHEN I APCHED RWY 31R, I MADE A R TURN ON THE RWY INSTEAD OF XING THE RWY, STILL PLANNING ON RWY 31C. THE CTLR SAID 'WHERE ARE YOU GOING?' AND BEFORE THE PNF COULD RESPOND, THE CTLR SAID TO CONTINUE TAXI TO RWY 31C AND HOLD SHORT, WHICH I DID. WE DEPARTED RWY 31C AND THE REST OF THE FLT WAS NORMAL. LACK OF COCKPIT COM WAS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. THE CTLR ISSUED THE CLRNC VERY QUICKLY. THE CLRNC TO RWY 22L IS NORMALLY VIA TXWY W AND TXWY N TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 22R. NO CONFLICT WAS CREATED.
