Narrative:
We were taxiing out to runway 19L at las. We were #1 for departure. Approaching the end of the taxiway and the hold short line for runway 19L, the first officer became occupied with something to his right side. Apparently a water spill had occurred and he was trying to clean it up. Perhaps I was watching him or just not paying attention, but I taxied past the hold short line by approximately 20 ft. No aircraft were in the area, no conflict was generated. When the first officer looked up, he asked if we were cleared position and hold, to which I answered 'no.' we called tower and advised them we were ready and were subsequently cleared for takeoff. Tower made no comment concerning our deviation. Obviously there are things we can do to prevent this in the future. First, always have both eyes outside the aircraft while taxiing. Second, follow procedures by not having beverages open during departure. Third, stop the aircraft in the event one crew member is completely out of the loop, as was our case.
