Narrative:
Cleared to land on runway 27C at sfb. Other aircraft on final approach to runway 27L&right. Mistakenly landed on the parallel taxiway to runway 27R (large runway). Runway 27C and runway 27L are probably converted txwys -- much smaller than runway 27R and in fact smaller than the taxiway I landed on. Major factor: landing right at sunset, therefore, windshield quite dusty. Also, not very familiar with airport. Did not see runway markings. Keeping close eye on landing traffic to my left and right on parallel runways. First indication that I was on a taxiway rather than a runway was that the centerline was yellow rather than white. Tower did not comment that I was lined up with the taxiway rather than the runway, nor did they comment when I was on the ground. I should have confirmed with the tower that I was lined up with the correct runway, though based on the size and location of the taxiway. I had every belief that I was landing on a runway. The main clue would have been the lack of runway end markings, but I did not notice that there were none due to the sun glare. Another choice would have been to study an airport diagram. This would have to have been done ahead of time because of the busy traffic pattern.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: RV-6 PLT LANDED ON A TXWY BECAUSE OF REDUCED VISIBILITY OF SUN POS. THE PLT LANDED AT SUNSET.
Narrative: CLRED TO LAND ON RWY 27C AT SFB. OTHER ACFT ON FINAL APCH TO RWY 27L&R. MISTAKENLY LANDED ON THE PARALLEL TXWY TO RWY 27R (LARGE RWY). RWY 27C AND RWY 27L ARE PROBABLY CONVERTED TXWYS -- MUCH SMALLER THAN RWY 27R AND IN FACT SMALLER THAN THE TXWY I LANDED ON. MAJOR FACTOR: LNDG RIGHT AT SUNSET, THEREFORE, WINDSHIELD QUITE DUSTY. ALSO, NOT VERY FAMILIAR WITH ARPT. DID NOT SEE RWY MARKINGS. KEEPING CLOSE EYE ON LNDG TFC TO MY L AND R ON PARALLEL RWYS. FIRST INDICATION THAT I WAS ON A TXWY RATHER THAN A RWY WAS THAT THE CTRLINE WAS YELLOW RATHER THAN WHITE. TWR DID NOT COMMENT THAT I WAS LINED UP WITH THE TXWY RATHER THAN THE RWY, NOR DID THEY COMMENT WHEN I WAS ON THE GND. I SHOULD HAVE CONFIRMED WITH THE TWR THAT I WAS LINED UP WITH THE CORRECT RWY, THOUGH BASED ON THE SIZE AND LOCATION OF THE TXWY. I HAD EVERY BELIEF THAT I WAS LNDG ON A RWY. THE MAIN CLUE WOULD HAVE BEEN THE LACK OF RWY END MARKINGS, BUT I DID NOT NOTICE THAT THERE WERE NONE DUE TO THE SUN GLARE. ANOTHER CHOICE WOULD HAVE BEEN TO STUDY AN ARPT DIAGRAM. THIS WOULD HAVE TO HAVE BEEN DONE AHEAD OF TIME BECAUSE OF THE BUSY TFC PATTERN.
