Narrative:
Our aircraft on northwest heading at FL350 level, ZTL. Conflicting carj, FL350 level on southwest heading. TCASII sounded once in 'traffic mode,' followed immediately by an RA 'climb' command. RA was followed by PF and we exceeded assigned altitude by 700 ft before descending back to FL350. No warning given by ATC before TCASII event (TA or RA). ATC issued turn right to 360 degrees during RA. Instruction not followed. Turn commanded was into the conflicting traffic.
