Narrative:
Flight from san-ont. Clearance, fly heading 275 degrees, radar vector bondo intersection, direct hdf, direct petis, direct ont. Outside petis NDB, crew was given clearance to fly heading 340 degrees for vectors to join localizer runway 26L ontario, descend to 4200 ft. Crew, after leveling at 4200 ft, crew received egpws 'terrain, terrain, pull up' warning. Captain flying, complied and immediately climbed to 5000 ft where warning stopped. ATC was notified and flight proceeded to ont with no further accident. Upon descent into the ont area, the crew had the egpws with terrain activated. Crew saw the terrain ahead of aircraft and determined that the descent clearance to 4200 ft was safe and reasonable. The crew believes that terrain was never a factor, but had no choice but to respond to the warning using proper CFIT recovery technique. Both myself and first officer do not believe any other aircraft were placed in jeopardy.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757-200 CREW EXECUTED A EGPWS EMER ESCAPE MANEUVER WITH CLB UNTIL THE EGPWS TERRAIN WARNING STOPPED. ACFT WAS AT THE MVA AT THE TIME OF OCCURRENCE, IN ONT CLASS C AIRSPACE.
Narrative: FLT FROM SAN-ONT. CLRNC, FLY HDG 275 DEGS, RADAR VECTOR BONDO INTXN, DIRECT HDF, DIRECT PETIS, DIRECT ONT. OUTSIDE PETIS NDB, CREW WAS GIVEN CLRNC TO FLY HDG 340 DEGS FOR VECTORS TO JOIN LOC RWY 26L ONTARIO, DSND TO 4200 FT. CREW, AFTER LEVELING AT 4200 FT, CREW RECEIVED EGPWS 'TERRAIN, TERRAIN, PULL UP' WARNING. CAPT FLYING, COMPLIED AND IMMEDIATELY CLBED TO 5000 FT WHERE WARNING STOPPED. ATC WAS NOTIFIED AND FLT PROCEEDED TO ONT WITH NO FURTHER ACCIDENT. UPON DSCNT INTO THE ONT AREA, THE CREW HAD THE EGPWS WITH TERRAIN ACTIVATED. CREW SAW THE TERRAIN AHEAD OF ACFT AND DETERMINED THAT THE DSCNT CLRNC TO 4200 FT WAS SAFE AND REASONABLE. THE CREW BELIEVES THAT TERRAIN WAS NEVER A FACTOR, BUT HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO RESPOND TO THE WARNING USING PROPER CFIT RECOVERY TECHNIQUE. BOTH MYSELF AND FO DO NOT BELIEVE ANY OTHER ACFT WERE PLACED IN JEOPARDY.
