Narrative:
We had a dangerous goods manifest for 24 consumer commodities in the forward cargo pit. In operations, I asked the agent what was in the packages. She said she thought there were perfumes, etc, but she wasn't sure. I asked if anyone knew what was in the packages. She did not know, but she made some phone calls and could not get an answer. She then had the head security guy meet us at the airplane. He told us the packages arrived already packed and ready to load. I did not ask if the packages were x-rayed. I assume they are, but not sure. I would like to know what the exact procedure is for packages of this type. It is an uncomfortable feeling having packages on the aircraft that no one knows what's in them. The security guy said all swiss procedures are followed for this type of package. Us, as pilots, know very little about the procedures and layers of defense that go into verifying what is in our cargo. I know some items may be classified, but I would like to know as much as I can about this.
