Narrative:
Flight was taxiing out to runway 6 via taxiway J and taxiway D. At the intersection of taxiway J and taxiway D, the captain turned right onto taxiway M instead of left onto taxiway D. The captain advised the first officer 'crossing runway 6/24, clear left (traffic)' and the first officer replied 'clear right.' after crossing the hold short line, the captain brought the aircraft to a stop prior to encroaching on the runway, after realizing his error. The controller instructed the crew to back-taxi into position and hold on runway 6. The crew had previously briefed a taxi to runway 36, which likely contributed to the mistake.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CRJ CAPT CROSSED HOLD LINES FOR ACTIVE RWY WHILE TAXIING AT GRB.
Narrative: FLT WAS TAXIING OUT TO RWY 6 VIA TXWY J AND TXWY D. AT THE INTXN OF TXWY J AND TXWY D, THE CAPT TURNED R ONTO TXWY M INSTEAD OF L ONTO TXWY D. THE CAPT ADVISED THE FO 'XING RWY 6/24, CLR L (TFC)' AND THE FO REPLIED 'CLR R.' AFTER XING THE HOLD SHORT LINE, THE CAPT BROUGHT THE ACFT TO A STOP PRIOR TO ENCROACHING ON THE RWY, AFTER REALIZING HIS ERROR. THE CTLR INSTRUCTED THE CREW TO BACK-TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD ON RWY 6. THE CREW HAD PREVIOUSLY BRIEFED A TAXI TO RWY 36, WHICH LIKELY CONTRIBUTED TO THE MISTAKE.
