Narrative:

Event took place while taxiing to runway 5 at providence, ri, green state field. After pushback and disconnect from gate, we were facing n-nw parallel to taxiway T. We received clearance to taxi to runway 5 via t-n-V hold short taxiway C. We began to taxi on taxiway T towards the intersection of txwys t-n-V and runway 16/34. We taxied onto runway 16/34. This was necessary to make the turn onto taxiway north and then onto V. The maneuver requires a 180 degree turn on runway 16/34 to end up on taxiway V. During the taxi, the markings on the signs and painted surfaces were confusing and we did not complete the 180 degree turn in time onto taxiway V. Instead, we had to taxi down runway 16 and turn off onto taxiway M. The number of txwys intersecting in that area plus the runway and the markings create confusion. The largest contributing factor is taxiway V. Taxiway V appears to also double as a runway and is marked and painted accordingly. There is a hold short line and red markings painted at the intersection of taxiway T and V. These markings make you want to turn away from taxiway V instead of onto it. In addition, taxiway V appears too narrow for a 757. Recommend controller phraseology stating 'cleared to make turn on runway 16/34' or 'be advised taxiway V has runway markings.' we both have a verbal description of the intersection, but a blow up visual in the charts would also help eliminate some confusion.

Title: B757 CREW DURING TAXI AT PVD, DID NOT CORRECTLY FOLLOW TAXI INSTRUCTIONS.

Narrative: EVENT TOOK PLACE WHILE TAXIING TO RWY 5 AT PROVIDENCE, RI, GREEN STATE FIELD. AFTER PUSHBACK AND DISCONNECT FROM GATE, WE WERE FACING N-NW PARALLEL TO TXWY T. WE RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 5 VIA T-N-V HOLD SHORT TXWY C. WE BEGAN TO TAXI ON TXWY T TOWARDS THE INTXN OF TXWYS T-N-V AND RWY 16/34. WE TAXIED ONTO RWY 16/34. THIS WAS NECESSARY TO MAKE THE TURN ONTO TXWY N AND THEN ONTO V. THE MANEUVER REQUIRES A 180 DEG TURN ON RWY 16/34 TO END UP ON TXWY V. DURING THE TAXI, THE MARKINGS ON THE SIGNS AND PAINTED SURFACES WERE CONFUSING AND WE DID NOT COMPLETE THE 180 DEG TURN IN TIME ONTO TXWY V. INSTEAD, WE HAD TO TAXI DOWN RWY 16 AND TURN OFF ONTO TXWY M. THE NUMBER OF TXWYS INTERSECTING IN THAT AREA PLUS THE RWY AND THE MARKINGS CREATE CONFUSION. THE LARGEST CONTRIBUTING FACTOR IS TXWY V. TXWY V APPEARS TO ALSO DOUBLE AS A RWY AND IS MARKED AND PAINTED ACCORDINGLY. THERE IS A HOLD SHORT LINE AND RED MARKINGS PAINTED AT THE INTXN OF TXWY T AND V. THESE MARKINGS MAKE YOU WANT TO TURN AWAY FROM TXWY V INSTEAD OF ONTO IT. IN ADDITION, TXWY V APPEARS TOO NARROW FOR A 757. RECOMMEND CTLR PHRASEOLOGY STATING 'CLEARED TO MAKE TURN ON RWY 16/34' OR 'BE ADVISED TXWY V HAS RWY MARKINGS.' WE BOTH HAVE A VERBAL DESCRIPTION OF THE INTXN, BUT A BLOW UP VISUAL IN THE CHARTS WOULD ALSO HELP ELIMINATE SOME CONFUSION.
