Narrative:
Love tower told us to 'taxi into position and hold.' we read back the instruction. Then love tower told a challenger to 'taxi up to and hold short behind the citation (us).' we thought that didn't sound right, so we asked tower to confirm 'position and hold' while we were moving. The tower was busy and there was no answer. We made sure that the approach sector was clear, and taxied into position on the runway (runway 13L). Tower then cleared us for takeoff. As we started rolling, tower then canceled our takeoff clearance and told us to clear the runway because traffic was on 1 mi final. As we cleared the runway, tower told us that we had not been cleared to taxi into position and hold, but that we were initially told to taxi up to and hold short. Supplemental information from acn 615971: once in position, the controller cleared us for immediate takeoff and then soon thereafter canceled our takeoff clearance as we accelerated through about 40 KTS. Controller began to tell us that we had not been cleared onto the runway.

Title: C550 AT DAL ENTERS RWY FOR TKOF, RECEIVES IMMEDIATE TKOF CLRNC AND BEGINS TKOF, RECEIVES CLRNC CANCELLATION AS ATC CHALLENGES FLT CREW.
Narrative: LOVE TWR TOLD US TO 'TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD.' WE READ BACK THE INSTRUCTION. THEN LOVE TWR TOLD A CHALLENGER TO 'TAXI UP TO AND HOLD SHORT BEHIND THE CITATION (US).' WE THOUGHT THAT DIDN'T SOUND RIGHT, SO WE ASKED TWR TO CONFIRM 'POS AND HOLD' WHILE WE WERE MOVING. THE TWR WAS BUSY AND THERE WAS NO ANSWER. WE MADE SURE THAT THE APCH SECTOR WAS CLR, AND TAXIED INTO POS ON THE RWY (RWY 13L). TWR THEN CLRED US FOR TKOF. AS WE STARTED ROLLING, TWR THEN CANCELED OUR TKOF CLRNC AND TOLD US TO CLR THE RWY BECAUSE TFC WAS ON 1 MI FINAL. AS WE CLRED THE RWY, TWR TOLD US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD, BUT THAT WE WERE INITIALLY TOLD TO TAXI UP TO AND HOLD SHORT. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 615971: ONCE IN POS, THE CTLR CLRED US FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF AND THEN SOON THEREAFTER CANCELED OUR TKOF CLRNC AS WE ACCELERATED THROUGH ABOUT 40 KTS. CTLR BEGAN TO TELL US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED ONTO THE RWY.
