Narrative:
En route from mmpe (rocky point, mexico) to tus, az, I opened a DVFR flight plan with prescott radio and was told to squawk XXXX. I inadvertently squawked 'standby' and crossed the united states/mexico border with the transponder on 'standby.' shortly thereafter, an F16 maneuvered close, crossed my flight path, then dove away. It was apparent that we both had visual contact. After that encounter, I noted my transponder on 'standby' and turned it 'on.' no mention of this incident was made by ATC (or FSS upon closure of my DVFR flight plan). Therefore, I do not know if it was an 'intercept to identify' or simply a chance encounter.

Title: F16 AIR INTERCEPT PERFORMED ON A MAULE XING THE ADIZ WITH XPONDER ON STANDBY VERSUS THE ASSIGNED CODE 30 MI SW OF TUS, AZ.
Narrative: ENRTE FROM MMPE (ROCKY POINT, MEXICO) TO TUS, AZ, I OPENED A DVFR FLT PLAN WITH PRESCOTT RADIO AND WAS TOLD TO SQUAWK XXXX. I INADVERTENTLY SQUAWKED 'STANDBY' AND CROSSED THE UNITED STATES/MEXICO BORDER WITH THE XPONDER ON 'STANDBY.' SHORTLY THEREAFTER, AN F16 MANEUVERED CLOSE, CROSSED MY FLT PATH, THEN DOVE AWAY. IT WAS APPARENT THAT WE BOTH HAD VISUAL CONTACT. AFTER THAT ENCOUNTER, I NOTED MY XPONDER ON 'STANDBY' AND TURNED IT 'ON.' NO MENTION OF THIS INCIDENT WAS MADE BY ATC (OR FSS UPON CLOSURE OF MY DVFR FLT PLAN). THEREFORE, I DO NOT KNOW IF IT WAS AN 'INTERCEPT TO IDENT' OR SIMPLY A CHANCE ENCOUNTER.
