Narrative:
We were holding behind a B737, short of runway 23R in MMMX on taxiway B6 after landing on runway 23L. The tower said something in spanish, and the B737 started to move onto runway 23R. The tower then told us to follow what we heard him to say, 'air carrier X' down runway 23R and exit at B5 to taxiway B. We assumed air carrier Y had just landed on runway 23R, but didn't see an air carrier X aircraft anywhere. So, we asked the tower the location of the air carrier X, we were instructed to follow. He then said to follow the aircraft ahead on runway 23R, which was an air carrier Z, B737. As there were 2 air carrier Z, A320's on taxiway B either side of taxiway B5, it looked like I couldn't exit runway 23R there, and the B737 we were instructed to follow had already past taxiway B5 and was exiting on B3. I continued to taxi on runway 23R past B5 to exit at B3 onto taxiway B. Tower then asked us why we passed taxiway B5, and it was only then that I realized that he didn't want us to follow the B737 to B3. Supplemental information from acn 617508: once parked, an air carrier representative told us we had to go to the airport auths. We did, accompanied by the station manager, filled out a report for the incident.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A320. THE FOREIGN ATCT LCL CTLR WAS NOT ABLE TO COMMUNICATE WELL ENOUGH IN ENGLISH, WHAT HE WANTED DONE IN HIS CLRNC.
Narrative: WE WERE HOLDING BEHIND A B737, SHORT OF RWY 23R IN MMMX ON TXWY B6 AFTER LNDG ON RWY 23L. THE TWR SAID SOMETHING IN SPANISH, AND THE B737 STARTED TO MOVE ONTO RWY 23R. THE TWR THEN TOLD US TO FOLLOW WHAT WE HEARD HIM TO SAY, 'ACR X' DOWN RWY 23R AND EXIT AT B5 TO TXWY B. WE ASSUMED ACR Y HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 23R, BUT DIDN'T SEE AN ACR X ACFT ANYWHERE. SO, WE ASKED THE TWR THE LOCATION OF THE ACR X, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW. HE THEN SAID TO FOLLOW THE ACFT AHEAD ON RWY 23R, WHICH WAS AN ACR Z, B737. AS THERE WERE 2 ACR Z, A320'S ON TXWY B EITHER SIDE OF TXWY B5, IT LOOKED LIKE I COULDN'T EXIT RWY 23R THERE, AND THE B737 WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO FOLLOW HAD ALREADY PAST TXWY B5 AND WAS EXITING ON B3. I CONTINUED TO TAXI ON RWY 23R PAST B5 TO EXIT AT B3 ONTO TXWY B. TWR THEN ASKED US WHY WE PASSED TXWY B5, AND IT WAS ONLY THEN THAT I REALIZED THAT HE DIDN'T WANT US TO FOLLOW THE B737 TO B3. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 617508: ONCE PARKED, AN ACR REPRESENTATIVE TOLD US WE HAD TO GO TO THE ARPT AUTHS. WE DID, ACCOMPANIED BY THE STATION MGR, FILLED OUT A RPT FOR THE INCIDENT.
