Narrative:
Took off runway 20 flaps 15 degrees, gross weight 220000 pounds from maui. On climb out, we noticed at around FL250, the airplane did not appear to be accelerating for the amount of thrust I set. At FL300, it was more obvious the aircraft was not performing as evidenced by a gradual degradation of climb performance as determined by the power, rate of climb, and airspeed. Finally, with firewalled thrust and disconnected autothrottle, the airspeed stabilized at approximately 220 KTS, and we got the flashing 'slow' alpha indication. We made the decision, with no EICAS annunciations, to turn around and get the aircraft on the ground in hnl. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter apologized for the fact that he could not discuss the situation as related to any findings postflt, as the company had placed a confidential category upon this information during a conference call.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: DIVERSION TO ANOTHER ARPT WHEN THE FLT CREW OF A CLBING B752 NOTE A DEGRADATION OF THEIR CLB AND ATTEMPTED CRUISE PERFORMANCE AT FL300, E OF AND LNDG AT HNL, HI.
Narrative: TOOK OFF RWY 20 FLAPS 15 DEGS, GROSS WT 220000 LBS FROM MAUI. ON CLBOUT, WE NOTICED AT AROUND FL250, THE AIRPLANE DID NOT APPEAR TO BE ACCELERATING FOR THE AMOUNT OF THRUST I SET. AT FL300, IT WAS MORE OBVIOUS THE ACFT WAS NOT PERFORMING AS EVIDENCED BY A GRADUAL DEGRADATION OF CLB PERFORMANCE AS DETERMINED BY THE PWR, RATE OF CLB, AND AIRSPD. FINALLY, WITH FIREWALLED THRUST AND DISCONNECTED AUTOTHROTTLE, THE AIRSPD STABILIZED AT APPROX 220 KTS, AND WE GOT THE FLASHING 'SLOW' ALPHA INDICATION. WE MADE THE DECISION, WITH NO EICAS ANNUNCIATIONS, TO TURN AROUND AND GET THE ACFT ON THE GND IN HNL. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR APOLOGIZED FOR THE FACT THAT HE COULD NOT DISCUSS THE SIT AS RELATED TO ANY FINDINGS POSTFLT, AS THE COMPANY HAD PLACED A CONFIDENTIAL CATEGORY UPON THIS INFO DURING A CONFERENCE CALL.
