Narrative:
We were assigned a ferry flight from ZZZ to ZZZ1, followed by a revenue flight form ZZZ1 to ZZZ in the same aircraft. The first officer did a preflight inspection of the cabin and discovered that the 'battery ok' light at the left upper deck door did not test. ZZZ maintenance was advised and was unsuccessful at getting the light to work. Only 1 mechanic was available and he asked that we obtain a deferral from maintenance controller while he reassembled the door. We agreed and called maintenance controller. He issued a deferral and a new mrd (maintenance release document), and MEL card over the ACARS printer. After flying to ZZZ1 and back to ZZZ, it was brought to our attention by the FAA inspector who rode the jump seat that the deferral was for the wrong light. Maintenance controller had deferred the 'ground mode' light, not the 'battery ok' light. ZZZ 'MM' was advised of this error.

Narrative: WE WERE ASSIGNED A FERRY FLT FROM ZZZ TO ZZZ1, FOLLOWED BY A REVENUE FLT FORM ZZZ1 TO ZZZ IN THE SAME ACFT. THE FO DID A PREFLT INSPECTION OF THE CABIN AND DISCOVERED THAT THE 'BATTERY OK' LIGHT AT THE L UPPER DECK DOOR DID NOT TEST. ZZZ MAINT WAS ADVISED AND WAS UNSUCCESSFUL AT GETTING THE LIGHT TO WORK. ONLY 1 MECH WAS AVAILABLE AND HE ASKED THAT WE OBTAIN A DEFERRAL FROM MAINT CTLR WHILE HE REASSEMBLED THE DOOR. WE AGREED AND CALLED MAINT CTLR. HE ISSUED A DEFERRAL AND A NEW MRD (MAINT RELEASE DOCUMENT), AND MEL CARD OVER THE ACARS PRINTER. AFTER FLYING TO ZZZ1 AND BACK TO ZZZ, IT WAS BROUGHT TO OUR ATTN BY THE FAA INSPECTOR WHO RODE THE JUMP SEAT THAT THE DEFERRAL WAS FOR THE WRONG LIGHT. MAINT CTLR HAD DEFERRED THE 'GND MODE' LIGHT, NOT THE 'BATTERY OK' LIGHT. ZZZ 'MM' WAS ADVISED OF THIS ERROR.
